Welsh Labour MP for Ogmore, Chris Elmore, has been appointed as a Shadow Scottish Office Minister in new UK Labour Leader, Keir Stamer’s front bench team. He will also serve as a Senior Opposition Whip.
Chris will take up his position as the Shadow Minister of State under the party’s new Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland, Ian Murray MP.
Since first being elected in 2016, Chris has previously served as an Opposition Whip and has been a member of several Parliamentary Select Committees. He was recently elected to the Foreign Affairs Select Committee – a role he will continue to hold alongside his new party responsibilities.
Commenting on his appointment, Chris Elmore MP said:
“I’m delighted to have been asked to serve in Keir Starmer’s front bench team at such a crucial time for the future of our country.
“I don’t underestimate the challenge that the Labour Party faces in Scotland and I’m looking forward to working with the Shadow Secretary of State, Ian Murray MP, Scottish Labour MSPs and councillors to help bring about a Labour resurgence in Scotland.
“In Wales, Welsh Labour has consistently delivered since the birth of devolution. All too often, where Welsh Labour leads, others follow and I will certainly be using my experiences in Wales within this new role.
“Of course, my first priority has been – and always will be – to stand up for the best interests of my constituents here in Ogmore. My work as part of Labour’s Shadow Scotland team will never get in the way of that. Indeed, a crucial part of this work will be exploring how we can bring about a fairer devolved future for our whole United Kingdom – something that I will certainly be banging the drum for on behalf of communities across Wales.”
Chris will continue to raise local issues on behalf of constituents in Parliament and has reiterated that ensuring local residents receive adequate support throughout the current Coronavirus pandemic was “front and centre” of his mind. He is continuing to work with colleagues in the Welsh Labour Government and the UK Government to ensure the national response to the pandemic reflects the needs of what is happening on the ground.
“My brilliant team and I are continuing to respond to constituents’ concerns regarding the Coronavirus pandemic as quickly as we can. This is a deeply unsettling period for everybody and I will carry on working as hard as I can to ensure we weather this storm as best we can.”
