This Friday (9 May) marks Victory in Europe (VE) Day. Despite the social distancing measures that remain in place, communities in the Ogmore constituency and across Ogmore are finding unique ways to mark the landmark anniversary while respecting the lockdown restrictions.
Welsh Labour MP for Ogmore will be sharing a special video to mark VE Day via his social media feeds and is encouraging his constituents to connect digitally with others to mark this important moment in Europe’s history.
Ahead of the 75th anniversary of VE Day, Chris Elmore MP said:
“While this isn’t the way we all wanted to mark this important day in our country’s history just a few months ago, I know that my constituents and people across the UK will rise to the challenging circumstances we are in. Friday is an opportunity for us to remember those who fought in the army, the navy, the air force, the police, the ARP wardens, the doctors and nurses who tended to the wounded, the merchant navy and the land army, and all those who worked in industries essential to the war effort.
“We remember also why they fought and were willing to sacrifice so much for the cause in which they found themselves united. They fought so that others would have the freedom to live, to follow the religion of their choice, to vote for the politician of their choice. They fought so that no one had the right to choose who could live and who should die.
“It always astounds me to hear the stories of those who were there, who had lived and fought during the war, and who witnessed the crowds celebrating on this day 75 years ago. This generation have few members still with us and I think it is so important that we listen to them and their incredible stories while we still can. We must never forget what they sacrificed and why, and use it to build the foundation of the society in which we would like to live.
“We must continue to foster tolerance and fight racism to truly honour the sacrifice their generation made. To all those who made the ultimate sacrifice so that history would swing in freedom’s favour, we thank you.”
