Welsh Labour MP for Ogmore, Chris Elmore, has praised Ortho Clinical Diagnostics (OCD) based in his constituency for playing a leading role in responding to COVID-19. OCD is one of the key firms producing crucial antibody tests which will help to determine when an individual has previously had the virus. The tests are considered to be a critical part of the Welsh and UK Government’s strategies to ease lockdown restrictions which were put in place back in March.
The US firm which owns the site in Pencoed is the only company currently manufacturing the test in the UK. The test will use a sample of blood to check for antibodies to which could provide a level of immunity to COVID-19. Urgent research is currently being undertaken globally to determine how long any such immunity will last.
Chris Elmore MP said:
“Individuals, community groups, and local businesses have responded to this pandemic with great resilience and I’m so proud of the great efforts that so many people are making.
“It’s fantastic to hear that Ortho Clinical Diagnostics in Pencoed is leading the way in manufacturing antibody tests, which could be a game-changer in helping us to improve our understanding of how the virus has spread in the community.
“While the level of immunity antibodies provide remains unclear, this is a vital step forward and it’s really positive to see local Ogmore businesses contributing to the collective national effort.”
The Welsh Labour Government has announced that this test will be an important part of their testing and tracing system, which will underpin new measures to ease lockdown restrictions in the coming weeks.
“It is absolutely vital that these tests are produced and delivered to those who need them so that we can begin to open up Wales again in a safe and managed way. I have no doubt that businesses across our communities will continue to play their full part in helping to meet the challenges ahead.”
