Ogmore MP continues to push for rail investment in Wales

July 15, 2020

Local Welsh Labour MP for Ogmore, Chris Elmore, continued campaigning to secure greater rail investment this week by chairing a virtual meeting of cross-party MPs, Transport for Wales, and Network Rail. Since he was first elected in 2016, Chris has been calling on the UK Government to address the inadequate level of resources allocated to the Welsh rail network in comparison to other UK nations.

As longstanding Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Rail in Wales, Chris convened the meeting on Monday (13 July) to allow MPs from across Wales to raise issues directly with representatives from Transport for Wales and Network Rail. The franchisee and the network operator also took the opportunity to give the group an update on the impact coronavirus has had on operational and future rail improvement plans.

In his local Ogmore constituency, Chris has been continuing to push for improved services and has been working with stakeholders from across all levels of government to secure the closure of the dangerous level crossing in Pencoed.

Chris Elmore MP said:

“The Prime Minister is promising to “build, build, build” and I don’t want any infrastructure investment the government is providing to stop at the Welsh border. For far too long, Wales has been dealt a poor hand when it comes to rail investment and it’s high time this was addressed.

“I’m really pleased we’ve been able to take the APPG’s meetings online while the coronavirus pandemic persists – this is an issue which can’t afford to be kicked into the long grass.

“We need a rail network across Wales that is fit for the twenty-first century. The UK Government needs to work with Welsh MPs on a cross-party basis and with the Welsh Labour Government to deliver just that.”
