South Wales economy is “at a perilous crossroads” – Ogmore MP calls on UK Government to act

Welsh Labour MP for Ogmore, Chris Elmore, has called on the UK Government to bring forward specific support to save jobs and create new employment opportunities to support the South Wales economy. This latest intervention comes as the impact of the coronavirus pandemic continues to have a devastating impact on the region four months after the initial lockdown was implemented.

Speaking during the latest question session with the Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy in the Commons, Chris called on ministers to bring forward support to “save, protect, and create new, highly-skilled and well-paid” jobs.

The Ogmore MP highlighted the string of recent job losses announced at British Airways and GE Aviation, as well as Ineos Automotive’s decision to suspend its plans to site its 4x4 vehicle plant in Bridgend. He also underlined how damaging these latest blows were to the South Wales economy, given that the Ford engine plant in Bridgend is scheduled for closure in September of this year.

Speaking after the question session, Chris Elmore MP said:

“Nobody doubts that this pandemic has brought about an economic shock the likes of which none of us have seen in living memory. But the UK Government must realise that it holds a critical role in determining how the South Wales economy recovers from this crisis.

“I really do urge UK Government Ministers to work urgently with the Welsh Labour Government to do everything they can to help save jobs and to invest in the South Wales economy to create new, skilled jobs for our local workforce.

“The road ahead is an uncertain one – that much is clear. But what we can’t afford to see is inaction from the UK Government at this critical time. Individuals and families who rely on these jobs need to have something to turn to beyond the welfare system. Ministers must ensure that they do not create a lost generation through inaction.”
