Local Welsh Labour MP for Ogmore, Chris Elmore, was delighted to join Bridgend Youth Council’s latest meeting last week via the videoconferencing app, Zoom. Joined by the Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council, Councillor Huw David, Chris and the group discussed a variety of issues, including the continuing response to Covid-19, votes at 16, and the climate emergency.
Bridgend Youth Council consists of a mayor, cabinet members, and tens of youth councillors aged between 11 and 25. They are currently looking at a range of issues, including: education, with a particular focus on political education in schools, climate and environmental change, the importance of sustainability, and mental health.
Following the meeting, Chris Elmore MP said:
“One of the best parts of my job is speaking with young people who are engaged with our political system across our communities – it’s really positive to see. I’d like to thank all of the members of the Youth Council for having me join their latest meeting.
“The impact of Covid-19 and the way we interact with our natural environment will have a pronounced effect on the future for younger generations and it’s so good to see so many young people so readily engaged in these issues.
“I think this will not be the last time I see some of these budding politicians, and I would not be surprised to bump into a few of them in Westminster in the future!”
