Welsh Labour MP for Ogmore, Chris Elmore, has received vital information about the provision of local postal deliveries following a large number of local residents raising concerns with him. Ogmore constituents from the Llanharan area have been in touch with Chris following an apparent reduction in deliveries of post being made in the area.
In response to a recent letter from Chris, the Royal Mail has acknowledged that a large number of staff illnesses during the Covid-19 pandemic has caused a fall in the number of deliveries being made in the area. The situation is now improving and deliveries are now taking place every other day, having reduced to two days per week during the peak of the pandemic.
Postal workers have been under a significant amount of pressure since the Covid-19 pandemic began due to the increase in online shopping, high temperatures, and the necessity to adhere to the strict social distancing and self-isolation procedures currently in place.
Chris Elmore MP said:
“I know that our local posties have been working so hard to ensure that constituents across Ogmore receive their mail in a timely fashion. Their safety must come first however, and I completely understand how quickly the onset of these staffing pressures was.
“Thanks to the many local residents in Llanharan who have been in touch with me to raise their concerns about the decline in the number of deliveries, I’m pleased that the Royal Mail has now confirmed that this situation is improving rapidly.
I will continue to monitor this closely and would like to thank all of our postal workers for their efforts during this particularly difficult time.”
At the height of the crisis, up to 30 per cent of local postal workers were off sick or self-isolating due to Covid-19. The Royal Mail’s correspondence with Chris states that this level has now fallen to around 5 per cent.
