Ogmore MP calls on UK Government to tackle anti-vax misinformation online

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has called on the UK Government to take action to ensure that social media companies tackle anti-vaccination misinformation online.

Speaking in the House of Commons this week, Elmore highlighted how the spread of misinformation could undermine our ability to end the Coronavirus crisis with a clinically safe and effective vaccine.

His intervention came as research from the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) showed that social networks are failing to tackle coronavirus-related anti-vaccination posts containing "clearly harmful information" even after the material is brought to their attention.

Chris Elmore MP said:

“Tackling pernicious anti-vax misinformation online needs to be a priority for the UK Government, the social media giants, and each one of us as individuals.

“We must not allow dangerous conspiracy theories to undermine our ability to finally bring an end to this crisis. The UK Government must urgently work with the social media platforms to ensure dangerous conspiracy theories do not continue to be given the oxygen they need to thrive in the online Wild West.

Time and time again, ministers have failed to bring forward the long-awaited Online Harms Bill. This research lays bare the very real physical dangers of allowing our online world to remain largely ungoverned.”
