Ogmore MP Chris Elmore has redoubled his call for the UK Government to tackle anti-vaxxers’ misinformation on social media and in our communities and to support the scientific messaging around the safety of vaccinations, as news comes that the rollout of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine will begin next week.
The UK Government have said that “the science is clear – vaccines save lives” but, having been campaigning on this issue for some months, Chris fears they are not doing enough to enforce this message among the public.
Speaking to the Financial Times, Chris said that a campaign to promote the safety and science of the Covid vaccine is needed to tackle misinformation online.
Chris Elmore MP said:
“When the UK Government wants something, there is an absolute clarity of message, like ‘Getting Brexit done’ or ‘Stay home, save lives’. We’ve been living with these slogans for months, but there is still no clear messaging on vaccination.
“We know how important vaccination is to public health and how dangerous anti-vax messaging is – the WHO puts vaccine hesitancy in the top 10 risks to public health around the world. The UK Government need to work much harder to tackle this, and the sooner they introduce this vaccine campaign, the better.
“Our NHS heroes have been working flat out to care for those with Covid, developing methods of combating the virus, and the best way to support them now is to ensure that a vaccination programme is not derailed by anti-vax messaging.”
