Chris Elmore MP urges constituents in Ogmore to give safely to charities this Christmas
Chris Elmore MP has joined charity regulators and Action Fraud to help people in Ogmore ensure they give to genuine registered charities this Christmas.
Figures from the national fraud reporting centre show that almost £350,000 of charitable donations ended up in the pockets of criminals over the festive period last year.
Chris is urging people to check before giving, helping to ensure that all donations reach genuine charities this Christmas. Action Fraud, the Charity Commission, and the Fundraising Regulator have warned that while the vast majority of fundraising appeals and collections are genuine, criminals can set up fake charities, or even impersonate well-known charitable organisations, to deceive victims.
By giving to a registered, regulated charity this Christmas, people in Ogmore can have assurance that their funds will be accounted for in line with charity law. Chris Elmore MP said:
“The way that the community have pulled together this year in Ogmore has been truly incredible. Charities have worked wonders with their volunteers and individuals have also done such great work. It’s saddening that some people will stoop so low as to defraud both those making the donation and the charities who will miss out on vital support as a result.
“Together, we can ensure we support registered charities and be vigilant against ‘charity’ scams. That way, we can make sure that our gifts and donations are going to those who need it and to whom they will make a real difference.”
