“The UK Government must tackle vaccine misinformation in the public health campaign against Covid-19” – Chris Elmore MP
Ogmore MP and Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Social Media Chris Elmore has once again spoken out about the dangers of vaccine misinformation spreading online as the research to develop a Covid-19 vaccine continues.
Vaccines can take more than 10 years to develop, from the initial research stage, through clinical trials, and finally to regulatory approval. However, the speed of researchers and pharmaceutical companies has been unprecedented during the coronavirus pandemic. This has raised concerns about safety among the general public.
Chris Elmore MP said:
“The anti-vax agenda is incredibly dangerous for people’s health. Conspiracy theorists who are are pushing the anti-vax agenda are exploiting, and often making money out of, people’s genuine fears and questions about a vaccine.”
“Its natural and understandable for people to have questions about the safety and efficacy of the vaccines that doctors and scientists are working so hard to develop. But we need to make sure people are given accurate and transparent information explaining the development of the various vaccines being developed so that they can feel reassured about their safety, as well as tackling the misinformation that is being spread online.
“Vaccination for all sorts of illnesses is incredibly important and saves as many as three million lives every year. We cannot allow malicious and exploitative conspiracy theorists to jeopardise the safety and health of so many people.”
