Welsh Labour MP for Ogmore, Chris Elmore, has held a virtual event with the charity Independent Age to discuss what steps can be taken to ensure pensioners claim the welfare benefits they are entitled to.
Research from Independent Age shows that while around four million older people are entitled to receive Pension Credit to top up their retirement income, approximately a third of those eligible are not claiming it.
Chris is currently working with the charity on its “Credit Where It’s Due” campaign, which seeks to increase the uptake of this crucial welfare payment.
During the virtual event, Chris met with representatives from the charity and cross-party Parliamentary colleagues to discuss the ways through which the provision of Pension Credit could be promoted to a wider audience.
Commenting after the event, Chris Elmore MP said:
“Far too many older people living across my Ogmore constituency and right across the UK are not claiming what they’re entitled to.
“There’s a staggering £5.9 million worth of Pension Credit going unclaimed across Ogmore alone – let alone the rest of the country.
“Claiming what you’re entitled to can open up doors to other support like a free TV licence if you’re over 75. I would urge all local residents to check what they’re entitled to and get in touch if you need any advice or support.”
