Welsh Labour MP for Ogmore, Chris Elmore, has condemned Conservative MPs for voting against Labour proposals to extend the provision of free school meals in England over the school holidays.
On Wednesday, the Labour Party voted in favour of a motion in Parliament which would have meant disadvantaged pupils in England would receive their free school meal allowance over the half term and Christmas holidays. The Welsh Labour Government has already confirmed that this will be extended to school kids across Wales until at least Easter 2021.
Chris Elmore MP said:
“This week we’ve seen revelations from the government that private contractors are being paid up to £7,000 per day to run their failing test and trace system. The least ministers can do is provide kids in England with just £3 per day to make sure they don’t go hungry during the school holidays.
“Frankly, this government has got its priorities all wrong.
“Thank goodness the Welsh Labour Government is supporting our communities by ensuring this provision is available to disadvantaged pupils until at least next Easter.”
